It is definitely most important for retirees to understand that the Medigap and Medicare Advantage products that are available to the general public for purchase DO NOT apply to Tier I and Tier II VCCCDRA retirees since they are entitled to lifetime health benefits paid for by the District. Currently, the District is paying the full premium for the top tiered PERSCare Medicare Supplement for retirees who qualify for Medicare, and this supplement serves as the Medigap part of the insurance the District offers retirees through CalPERS. For retirees who do not qualify for Medicare, the District is paying half the premium for retirees who choose the PERSCare Basic Plan over the free CalPERS Choice Basic Plan.

Some of the info about signing up for Medicap and Medicare advantage do not seem to be applicable since we are going through CalPERS\VCCCD and will be limited by that. So far I have had very few problems with the new system. The main thing was trying to make sure I understood exactly what the choices are. Janice and Katy in benefits have been very patient and helped me enormously. Thanks!!
